Instructions.
- Read the following: Simpson pp. 41-43, this BBC article, pages 3-6 and 9-11 of this document.
- Respond to the following questions
- Explain the background to the ICC (when it was set up? Why? How many states have signed the treaty?)
- Explain the purpose of the ICC
- Identify the aims of the ICC
- Explain how the ICC works with national courts.
- Describe the circumstances under which the ICC may intervene (exercise its jurisdiction)
- Briefly (1-2 sentences) describe the role of each of the three trial chambers. (page 10 Understanding the ICC)
- Describe the role of the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) (page 10-11 Understanding the ICC)
Learning Activity 2
Objective: To understand the aims of the ICC and the extent to which it achieves its aims.
- Read the following: Simpson pp. 42-43, this article, this article, this article.
- In your workbook create a case study table that includes the following:
- The Aims of the ICC
- An example of when the ICC achieved its aims (Lubanga): what was alleged? What was the outcome?
- An example of when the ICC failed to achieve its aims (Kenyatta): what was alleged? What was the outcome?
- Evaluate the extent to which the ICC achieves its aims.
Learning Activity 3
Objective: To analyse criticism of the Internatioanl Criminal Court.
- Read through these short arguments: The ICC deserves our full support, Justice can't prevail in a vacuum, support and funding for the ICC is vital, ICC's dismal record comes at too high a price.
- Create a grid that analyses each argument it should include the following:
- The writer's contention.
- The facts and details the writer uses to back up his or her contention.
